چکیده

Given a group or semi-group Γ generated (in the sense of semi-groups) by some subset S ⊂ Γ, the Cayley graph of Γ with respect to S is the oriented graph having vertices γ ∈ Γ and oriented edges (γ, γs)s∈S . In this paper, we consider generating sets S which are not necessarily finite thus yielding oriented Cayley graphs which are perhaps not locally finite. The above situation gives rise to a homomorphism of semi-groups

On the possible volume of $mu$-$(v,k,t)$ trades

‎A $mu$-way $(v,k,t)$ $trade$ of volume $m$ consists of $mu$‎ ‎disjoint collections $T_1$‎, ‎$T_2‎, ‎dots T_{mu}$‎, ‎each of $m$‎ ‎blocks‎, ‎such that for every $t$-subset of $v$-set $V$ the number of‎ ‎blocks containing this t-subset is the same in each $T_i (1leq‎ ‎i leq mu)$‎. ‎In other words any pair of collections ${T_i,T_j}$‎, ‎$1leq i< j leq mu‎$ is a $(v,k,t)$ trade of volume $m$. Bounded Trajectories in Homogeneous Spaces of Semisimple Lie Groups

This is a report on a joint work with G.A. Margulis. The problem to be discussed is apparently motivated by number theory, more precisely, by problems in Diophantine approximation. Let us start by recalling that the set B of badly approximable real numbers has full Hausdorff dimension at any point, in other words, for any nonempty open subset W of R, dim(W ∩ B) = 1 (cf. [J,S]). On the other han...

Growth and generation in SL2(Z/pZ

We show that every subset of SL2(Z/pZ) grows rapidly when it acts on itself by the group operation. It follows readily that, for every set of generators A of SL2(Z/pZ), every element of SL2(Z/pZ) can be expressed as a product of at most O((log p)) elements of A ∪ A, where c and the implied constant are absolute.

Ideal Classes and Sl 2

and the matrix here is in SL2(R). (This action of SL2(R) on the upper half-plane is essentially one of the models for the isometries of the hyperbolic plane.) The action (1.1) makes sense with C replaced by any field K, and gives a transitive group action of GL2(K) on the set K ∪{∞}. Just as over the complex numbers, the formula (1.2) shows the action of SL2(K) on K ∪ {∞} is transitive. Now tak...
